"...who was of German ancestry but was born in PA. When he came to Ohio to seek a home he settled in the woods in Bloom Twp... and entered a quarter section of land which, in large part, still belongs to his descendants. His humble home was a log cabin built as near as possible to a stream of water, and in 1815 he erected a log barn, building it so compactly that it still stands and is one of the landmarks in the township. Dec. 18, 1895 issue - former Fairfield county resident, Elijah Dove, died at his home in Shelbyville, IL, at an advanced age. "Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V4, 1891-1895", Fairfield County Gen., Society, March 1999, p 98.

1895 - Will of Elijah Dove. The will of the late Elijah Dove was probated here Thursday. It is dated Jan. 8, 1890, and is signed by J. W. Powers and A. Middlesworth, respectively cashier and president of the First National Bank, as witnesses. Theodore F. Dove of this city, a son of the deceased and an attorney, is made executor and the entire estated, valued at from $25,000 to $30,000 -- is left to him in trust, to distribute as follows: Samuel Dove, a son, $10; T. F. Dove, two-thirteenths of the estate; to each remaining living child, one thirteenth of the estate. The part that would have gone to two sons now dead, is to be given to t heir children, share and share alike. The instrument provides that the executor is to have absolute freedom of action, and can dispose of all real estate in such time and manner as he deems best. He is given unlimited time in which to close up the business and it is to be relieved of all and every legal restraint. [Daily Review, Decatur, IL, Dec. 24, 1895]

"DOVE, ELIJAH, of Bloom township, was born where he now resides,
in the year 1811, and where his father entered land in an early day.
Mr. Dove received but a limited common school education in his
early life; he has however been a constant reader and hard student,
devoting his time principally during these latter years to religious subjects
and to his church. He was virtually the founder of the M. E. Church
in Carroll, over forty years ago, and has been not only an official
member since that time, but one of its warmest supporters; and has seen the
society grow in numbers, from ten or twelve to that of a hundred and
twenty-five. He was married in 1835, to Miss Mary Small, in every
sense a godly woman and a true helpmeet in society, church and family.
She died September 1, 1877, leaving behind her a family of fifteen
children, thirteen of whom are living, and are members of church.
John W. Dove, the oldest son, was a captain of a company in the late
war. Joseph, the youngest son, is at home, and is the present superintendent of the Methodist Episcopal Sabbath school at Carroll.", HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD AND PERRY COUNTIES, OHIO, THEIR PAST AND PRESENT, Compiled BY A. A. Graham, W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883, p 296.

[Note in the below it says Elijah died in Illinois]
"The grandfather of Mr. Dove, Elijah Dove, was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, July 27, 1811, where he spent most of his life and raised his family. In later years he went to Illinois and spent the rest of his life in that state. He died at Shelbyville, Illinois, in 1906. Elijah Dove had two brothers, Ruben Dove, whose home was in Winchester, Ohio, and Jacob Dove of Warsaw, Indiana. There were five sisters, namely: Laney Dove (Montgomery), Peggy Dove (Orwic), Mary Dove (Hummel), Annie Dove (Benadnur), all of Winchester, Ohio, and Elizabeth Dove (Kistler) of Warsaw, Indiana. The wife of Elijah Dove, Anna Mary Small, was born in York, Pennsylvania, March 18, 1814. She was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Louchs) Small, both of whom were born in York County, Pennsylvania, John Small on September 16, 1781, and Elizabeth Louchs on January 16, 1794", A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, written and compiled by William E. Connelley, Secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, copyright 1918; transcribed 1997.

"The father [Elijah] of our subject [Theodore] grew to a stalwart manhood [in Bloom township] under the pioneer influence the he obtained in his native county in the days when he was young. The school that he attended was taught in a log house, rudely furnished with slabs for seats which were without backs, and there were desks such as are in use at the present day. Holes were bored in logs, into which wooden pins were inserted, and a wide plank placed upon them answered the purpose of a more elaborate writing desk for large scholars. Mr. Dove [Elijah] resided with his parents until he attained his majority, and then he began his independent career as a farmer by renting the old family homestead. He afterward purchased the interest of the other heirs, and still retains the farm, although he ceased to occupy it in 1883, when he came to Shelbyville, and is living here in retirement at a venerable age. He has always been a devoted adherent of the Democratic party since he cast his first Presidential vote for Gen. Jackson more than half a centry ago. Religiously, he is a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which he joined in 1829. Mr. Dove was first married May 21, 1835, to Mary Small, who was born in York Co., PA., March 18, 1814, and was the eldest daughter of John and Elizabeth (Loucks) Small, who were also Pennsylvanians by birth. The mother of our subject [Theodore] died Sept. 1, 1877, leaving behind her the record of a life spent in well-doing and the blessed memory of a true womanhood. She was reared in the faith of the German Reformed Church, but after her marriage united with the Methodist Episcopal Church to which her husband belonged. Of that marriage eight sons and seven daughters were reared to maturity, of whom twelve are living. April 19, 1883, the father of our subject was married to a sister of his first wife, Tarcy Hall Small, and in her he finds a devoted companion." [Ancestry.com. 1874, March 13 - Mt. Blanchard, Ohio. Our little village has been unusually quiet for some time past. The health of the entire community is good. We are glad to notice through your columns that the noble women of Findlay are at work to rid that demon--yes, devil--whiskey, out of their midst. May they stick to it until every saloonist surrenders. We are happy to say that two of our saloons in this place have quit. Mr. Sol. Foor hired a man to tear out his entire bar fixtures, last Monday; says he does not intend to sell another drop of whiskey, ale, wine or beer"... [The Findlay jeffersonian, Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio, March 13, 1874, p 2]

1874, March 20 - At Mt. Blanchard. Sol. Foor, of Mt. Blanchard, has stopped selling liquor, and taken out his bar fixtures. hereafter he will keep a strictly temperance establishment. He now has a large stock of Fresh Family Groceries and Provisions which he will sell as cheap as they can be bought anywhere. He will also pay the highest market price for country produce. Give him a call before going elsewhere to buy. [The Findlay Jeffersonian. (Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio), 20 March 1874. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. ]

1874, May - Mt. Blanchard. Mr. Sol. Foor, our enterprising grocer, has put in a soda fountain, whre all who wish may quench the inner man to the tune of five cents. He has bought the lot adjoining him, and is moving his grocery store on the corner. [The Findlay Jeffersonian. (Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio), 08 May 1874. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. ]

1876, Nov. 17 - Mt. Blanchard - The M. E. Church is under going repairs, and progressing finely. But this improvement is being offset by a Public Nuisance, a saloon, started by S. L. Foor". [The Findlay Jeffersonian, Findlay, Ohio, Nov. 17, 1876, p 3]
