"Among the best known of the houses as well as the best known of the families
was that of Joseph Brown, the tanner. He was an eastern man, a Yankee, from
the good old state of Massachusetts. His wife was Rebecca, a very capable
woman and an excellent nurse very free to help those needing such services.
The Browns were a family of sorrows. There was a large family to grow up,
but in the early years of marriage that dread disease tuberculosis took a
heavy toll. Three boys, Henry, Charles and Chester, were the older sons to
survive. In their years there was born another son. William, about my age,
and a frequent companion of mine. Chester was killed at the battle of Stone
River. On learning of his fate the father went South immediately and secured
his body for burial in the home cemetery." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF

"The Foor family is an old one in this county, the fifth generation is now living here. John Foor, the progenitor, was a German who lived some years near Philadelphia, and thence emigrated to this county and settled while
most of this part of the state was wilderness. His children were Jacob, John, Leonard, Richard, Abraham, Mary and Catherine. The property on which Samuel S. and William H. H. Foor now live is the ancestral homestead of the family. Their father, David Foor, left it in early life, but returned when middle aged and died here. He was the father of five sons and two daughters. Four of the sons enlisted in 1861 for three years, or during the war. Three of them returned, but one, Francis, died in a rebel prison. S.S. Foor was the first three-years man that enlisted from East Providence. He married
Margaret Sheely, daughter of Andrew Sheely, of West Providence Township. She died in 1882, having borne nine children, four of whom are living. Mrs. Foor was a most exemplary Christian woman, and her loss was deeply felt. The Foor families were among the first supporters of the Christian Church in this township." from History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Co's, Pennsylvania by Waterman, Watkins and Co. 1884, pg. 324.

"John FOOR (FUHR) was born 1744 in Philadelphia county and was the son of
Johann Lenhart Foor who came from Germany to America in 1742. He furnished

in Philadelphia county, served in Washington's Army during the Revolution,
under Captains Drine and Shnyder, and migrated to Bedford County,
Providence Township about 1788. His son Leonard was born 1779 and married
1810. he had eight children, his eldest son David born 1811 and married

"Thomas Holmes, the father of our subject [Richard Holmes] was born in Washington Co., PA in 1778, and in about 1804 came west. While on his way here he looked for land where now states the city of Columbus, Ohio, but he did not consider it a good tract for farming purposes, so he continued on his way until he found a place where about ten acres had been cleared by the Indians, who has used it for a long time, having cultivated corn there. He found, too, that the squatters had taken possession of the land, but he paid the man a small amount of money to leave it and it was than that Mr. Holmes became the owner of a tract on section 1, Bloom township, Fairfield county. Upon this farm he reared his family of five sons and five daughters. He married Rachel Wells, who was a daughter of George Wells, one of the honored pioneer settlers of the community, who had come to the west from Virginia.
"The marriage of Thomas Holmes and Rachel Wells was blessed with ten children, but our subject is now the only one living. The father engaged in farming and stock-raising, and as there were no railroads at that time he would drive his stock across the country to Baltimore. The country was so wild that the path which he followed was scarcely more than a trail and bad conditions of the roads made travel very slow, as is evidenced by the fact that it took three to four months to make the trip from Ohio to Baltimore and return. Mr. Holmes continued to reside upon his farm until the time of his death, which occurred in 1847. "A Biographical Record of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, S. J. Clarke Pub., Co., 1902, p 387.

Phillip Lamb b 1779 is the son of Peter and Catherine (KIPLINGER) LAMB [info submitted by Judith Evers Flinn via May 2002 email]. She also sites the following sources for information on this family: "The Lamb Family in Ohio", by Sylvester Lamb, Oct. 24, 1927; Letter from Philip R. Lamb to Charles Goslen, Aug. 3, 1978 which can be found in the Vertical Surname File (Lamb), Genealogy section, Fairfield County District Library.
"of Bloom Twp", estate filed in 1832. Administrators were widow Jane, and John LAMB. Other names mentioned were Matilda LAMB and Washington LAMB. Peter Lamb JR purchased personal property. Peter's guardian was Abraham Van Courtright. Peter Lamb SR owned land in sections 23, 24, 25 in twp 14, range 20 -- and had been the guardian of Henry, Kitty, and Peter BOPE, heirs of Frederick BOPE, deceased, "Fairfield County Wills and Estate Abstracts, Cases 501-1000", Fairfield County Gen., Society, June 1997,p 35.
Partion records of 1840 mention his widow was JANE. Children were John, Peter, Washington, Matilda, Philip, and minors Frederick, Jacob and Felicia, "Partition Record Abstracts, V1, 1812-1851 Fairfield County, Ohio", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1987, p 30.
Partition records of 1833 - widow Jane, children Peter, Washington, and minors Matilda, Philip, Frederick, Jacob and Felicia H. Lamb, "Partition Record Abstracts, V1, 1812-1851 Fairfield County, Ohio", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1987, p 18.
The Mormon website shows this Philip to be married to Katharine BEAR (1783-1807). Is Katharine the first wife, and perhaps "Jane", the widow, a subsequent wife?
Case #955 discusses the guardian of Benjamin and George BOPE who were children of Frederick BOPE who was deceased by 1820 - the guardian was Philip LAMP who was deceased by 1835 and Jand and John LAMB were his administrators. "Fairfield County Will and Estate Abstracts, Cases 501-1000", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1997, p 50.
