_Henry TOMLINSON _ | |--Jesse TOMLINSON | |_Elizabeth _______
[T9381]
NAME/DOD: From Sharon Freeland, Superior, Colorado, via April 1999 email. Her querie on www.genforum.com reads: "I am a great-great-great-granddaughter of HENRY TOMLINSON. The name is often misspelled in early records as TUMBLESON, but the correct spelling is TOMLINSON. "My" HENRY TOMLINSON was in Fairfield County, Ohio, by 1799, as he is on the county tax records for 1799. HENRY TOMLINSON had a daughter named MARY TOMLINSON, but she would not have been old enough to marry in 1802. Henry's other children included JESSE TOMLINSON (Abt 1810 - Abt 1837) and JOSEPH TOMLINSON (1795 - 1829)."
CENSUS:
Jesse's 1844 Partition records mention widow Margaret, and minor children John, William and Henry Tomlinson, "Partition Record Abstracts, V1, 1812-1851 Fairfield County, Ohio", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1987, p 34.
Caseeeeee #1844 is the estate of Jesse Tomlinson of Bloom Twp., filed in 1840. Administrator was first Samuel Coffman and later Noah B. Coffman. Widow was Margaret. Noah B. Coffman was the guardian of minors John, William and Henry, heirs of Jesse Tomlinson. Phebe Tomlinson, wife of Patrick French, is mentioned. Jesse owned land in sections 12 and 13, township 14, range 20. "Fairfield County Will and Estate Abstracts, Cases 1001-2000, Jean Collier, Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1998, p 68.
From Sharon Butsch Freeland of Colorado, via October 2000 email:
"On September 23, 1840, Jesse was summoned to appear in court, for a jury to evaluate his sanity. His father-in-law, John Kauffmann/Coffman, filed a lunacy inquest against Jesse Tomlinson. In the court proceedings, it states that Jesse appeared in person at the hearing, and that Jesse made his mark (an "X") for the court. Fortunately, for Jesse, the jury of his peers ruled in his favor and declared Jesse "is not an idiot nor a lunatic, and neither is he insane."
On May 12, 1841, Jesse Tomlinson (who was executor of his father, Henry Tomlinson's, estate) obtained a mortgage on some of the land his father left his heirs when Henry died in 1837 or 1838. Both Jesse Tomlinson and Margaret Coffman Tomlinson, Jesse's wife, made their marks on the document.
On August 25, 1841, documents were filed with the court to open Jesse Tomlinson's estate and to appoint a guardian for Jesse's three minor sons, John Tomlinson, William Tomlinson, and Henry Tomlinson. Strangely, John Coffman (Jesse's father-in-law who had taken Jesse to court in 1840) died in February of 1841, so these two men died within a few months of each other. It makes me wonder if the insanity charges made by John Coffman against Jesse Tomlinson might have contributed to either one's death, directly or indirectly. Because of the dates of these documents, I conclude that Jesse Tomlinson died AFTER May 12, 1841, and BEFORE August 25, 1841."
