"JOHN CASTANIEN was born in Perry County, Ohio, June 11, 1825. His parents, Alexander and Marelius (King) Castanien, were natives of Prussia and Switzerland respectively, the former crossing the ocean to escape military service, the latter emigrating at the age of four years. They were married in Perry County, where they passed their entire lives, he a farmer and teacher of German schools. He died in his sixtieth year, his wife about the same age. Their children were John, Serenus, Jacob and David. John Castanien remained at home till his twenty-fifth year, obtaining the rudiments of an education and working upon the farm. In 1848, he came to this county, his father having entered his present farm of 100 acres, then covered with timber, which our subject has since removed. He is now the owner of 440 acres; his " bank" barn is the largest in the town ship, and his dwelling was erected in 1863-64 at a cost of $2,000. Mr. Castanien was married in the autumn of 1848, to Christina Alspach, five children resulting-Mahala, Caroline (wife of Emmet Bachtel), Frank, David and Amos E, Mrs. Castanien's demise occurred in 1861, at the age of thirty-five, and Mr. C. was married, November 25, 1863, to Miss Sophia Alspach (sister of first wife), daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Runkle) Alspach, natives of Pennsylvania, residents of Perry County, Ohio. She was born April 15, 1837. Their children were William H. and Allen B. In politics, Mr. C. is an independent Democrat. He and his family are all members of the German Reformed Church, of which he was many years a Deacon." "HISTORY OF WYANDOT COUNTY, OHIO", Leggett, Conaway & Co., 1884, p 907 - Pitt Township.

THE DATABASE RECORDS OF John Fuhr, b 1771, who already had parents listed -- and that of Johannes FOOR/FUHR/FUHRER, b abt 1771 who m Julianna, have been combined. Previously John FUHR b 1771 had no descendants listed, and seemed to drop off the Northhampton records about 1819. We feel that this is the same John who took his family to Fairfield County, Ohio, and therefore, the individuals have been merged into one.

"Capt. Henry L. Hart, who won military honors during the Civil War as an officer of an Illinois regiment, is a prominent citizen of Shelbyville, Shelby County, where he has for some time conducted business as a furniture dealer, and he has also been a conspicious figure in the municipal government. He was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, Oct. 20, 1837, a son of Barnhart Hart, who was born in Pennsylvania in February, 1812. The grandparents of our subjected removed from PA to the Buckeye State during the first quarter of the century, and were among the early pioneers of Fairfield County, where they both died soon after they located in its primeval wilds. Their son Barnhart was very small when he was orphaned, and he early had to work for a livelihood. At the age of fourteen he was bound as an apprentice to Mr. Beck, a blacksmith of Lancaster, and served with him seven years to learn the trade, receiving his board and clothes in repayment for his assistance. At the expiration of that time he did journey work for awhile, and then opened a smithy in the village of Jefferson and carried on business in his line in that place in 1851. In that year he bought a farm in Violet township and has since devoted his time to farming, being one of the prosperous, well-to-do farmers of the neighborhood. In early manhood he took unto himself a wife, whose name prior to their marriage was Mary Wooster, and she was born in Germany in 1812. The following are the names of the eight children that this worthy couple reared to maturity: Francis C., Henry L., Anna M., Charles, John, Elizabeth, Susan A., and Irving M. John, who was a member of Co. K, 114th Ohio Infantry died opposite Vicksburg while bravely fighting for his country. Ancestry.com. Barby was born with Down Syndrome which was a shock, but turned into a blessing, because she became the glue that held us together through life. We'll miss her, but we will proceed as she would have wished. Several of her nephews commented that, "We all grew up with Barby as a playmate - and then several generations did the same things with her." They said, "We got older, but Barby was always the same Barby we knew as kids." She always said that "nobody's perfect" and lived her life that way. Barby was a member of Berlin Brethren Church, where she attended Sunday School and church until she became too ill to do so. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. "The next house was occupied and owned by Daniel Shultz immediately after the Civil War. He lived here to a great age, and gained and kept more friends than any other man of my acquaintance. He had a family of three sons and two daughters to grow to maturity. A sweet little girl, I think they called Hattie, passed from them when but two. I can yet see her in memory as she would toddle about the place. Luther, the eldest son, a painter as his father, moved to the western part of the state. Horatio went to Chicago, where he conducted a school for the dance. Olive married George Weiser, for half century identified with the business interests of the Village, Mary changed her name to McLean, and moved with her husband to Magnetic Springs in northwestern Ohio. I do not know what became of George, the third son". "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 26.
