"Conrad Crumley, son of Christian and Salome Crumley, was born in Penn Township, Northampton County, PA., on the 24th of Jan., 1802; his parents were Lutherans and the infant Conrad was baptized and brought up in that faith. In the year 1803 Christian Crumley with his family, left PA to seek a new home in Ohio. They made a temporary stop in Lancaster and during that time one of his children died. He purchased a section of woodland in Bloom township, built a cabin and moved his family to the new home, about one mile west of Rock Mill. Here young Conrad remained until he became a man. He assisted his father in clearing up his farm, and tasted the joys and endured the privations of pioneeer life. When 18 years of age he was confirmed a member of the Lutheran Church, and to the end of his life was a faithful member and a consistent Christan. His membership at this time was at the Glick Church, Rev. M. J. Steck, pastor.

"On two occasions Christian Crumley loaded flat boats at Gallipolis for New Orleans. Conrad drove the team that carried, or drew, the produce to load these boats. He made nine trips in one winter, through an almost unbroken forest to Gallipolis, a distance of one hundred miles. February 23, 1824, Conrad Crumley was married to Miss Mary M. Feller. He then settled upon a quarter section of land donated by his father, entirely in the woods. He lived in a rude cabin and devoted his energies to clearing up his farm, where his son Daniel now resides, in Hocking township.

"Here he lived a quiet, peaceful life for forty-one years, and reared a large family of children, eleven in number. Two of his sons were in the Union army. After the war two of them, George and Daniel, were in Columbus and took passage on the same coach with Colonel McVeigh an family. The coach was upset and McVeigh and his son were killed. The Crumley boys remained with the family and brought the dead to Lancaster. When a friend spoke to the old man and praised his boys for their good conduct, tears came to his eyes and he replied: 'I am proud of my boys'.

"Conrad Crumley was one of the grand old men of the past, one whose example for good was felt in a very large circle of acquaintances. He was for a number of years a trustee of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Lancaster, and later of Trinity, near his home. He died March 8, 1879, aged 77 years. He had been married 55 years. His son David, married Sarah, a daughter of the late Daniel Ward." "Pioneer Period and Pioneer People of Fairfield County, Ohio", C. M. L. Wiseman, F. J. Heer Printing, Columbus, Ohio, 1901, p 291-292.

INDEX

[21642] DOM/POM: FHL Batch M513353, Franklin Co., Ohio, probate marriages, 1853-1862.
Names shown as Henry Eckhart and Sarah Zangmeister.

NAME: From 30 Dec 2000 post to the Zangmeister message board at ancestry.com by Kent Carlson. "Henry ECKHARDT, was born Sep 6 1833 in Hoff-Geismar, Hesse-Cassel, Germany, son of Henry and Wilhelmina (LEGER) ECKHARDT. He married in OH in 1859 to Miss Sarah ZANGMEISTER. She died in 1862 and he married in St. Joseph to Miss Wilhelmina HUBER. She died in 1875 in Sacramento. He remarried Miss Frederika HUBER, a sister of his second wife. By the first marriage he had William and Katie. By the third he had one child, Harry."

HENRY ECKHARDT

HENRY ECKHARDT, proprietor of wholesale and retail sportsmen's supply house, Sacramento, is a native of Hoff-Geismar, Hesse-Cassel, Germany, born September 6, 1833, and son of Henry and Wilhelmina (Leger) Eckhardt. His father was a restaurant and hotel keeper. Henry Eckhardt was educated at his native place from the age of six until he was fourteen, then went to Cassel to learn the gunsmith's trade, and served an apprenticeship four years. He then traveled throughout the South German countries, and on arriving at the proper age was notified to come home to enter the military service. He was too short of stature at the time to fulfill the qualifications, and was put off until next year. In the meantime, however, he decided to emigrate to America, and on the 10th of June, 1854, he sailed from Bremen on the sailship Von Stein, and landed at New York after an ocean voyage of fifty-two days. After a brief stop at the metropolis, he went to Columbus, Ohio, and was then compelled to be laid up by sickness. He went to work when able, sometimes at his trade, and again at farming in the country. He was married while in Ohio, in 1859, to Miss Sarah Zangmeister, who died in the early part of 1862. Mr. Eckhardt went to New York City and obtained employment at government work with Moore & Bons, 303 Broadway, and he and his brother William were employed there two years thereafter. All the work done at this shop was performed by hand, and when the government got to making everything by machinery, the rush stopped, and Mr. Eckhardt went West, bringing up at St. Joseph, Missouri, where he and his brother started in business. While there he served about six months in the Home Guards. The business in St. Joseph was continued until 1870, when Mr. Eckhardt came to California and opened a shop and store in Sacramento. He has built up an extensive trade, wholesale and retail, and it has come to be known far and near that every purchaser can depend exactly on what Mr. Eckhardt tells them in regard to his goods. Such a course cannot do otherwise than lead to success, and he has been successful. His second wife, whom he married in St. Joseph, was formerly Miss Wilhelmina Huber, a native of Germany, born at Kaiserlantern, on the Rhine, and who came to this country when a young lady. She died in 1875, at Sacramento. His present wife was formerly Miss Frederika Huber, a sister of his second wife. of the first marriage there are two children, viz: William, in the gun business at Spokane Falls, and Katie. By the present marriage there is one child- Harry. Mr Eckhardt is a member of Schiller Lodge, I. O. O. F., and of Lodge No. 81, A. O. U. W. [12876] "Across the street from the Elkhorn, however, stands a house whose occupants are well remembered since they were very active in the Village life. When I first remember it, it was the residence of Jacob Lehman. He was a shoemaker, who came to the Village from Middletown, or Oregon, when the hope of that site growing was given up. He was a public spirited man, as were his boys. Can I recall all their names? There were Andrew, George W., Elisha, Perry and Solomon. There were three daughters. These men were so active in the affairs of the Village that they deserve a chapter for themselves. But we must be content with brief sketches. Andrew was a farmer, and did not live in the Village at any time. George W., of course named in honor of the father of our country, was a blacksmith, and intensely interested in political affairs. About his forge gathered many of those likewise interested.... Perry Lehman was the hardware merchant for his lifetime. He was first a partner of Reuben Blackwood, and then of George Wiser. This firm was as widely known as the Village itself. Elisha and Solomon did not spend all their years in the home village, but were there so frequently as to be considered a part.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 28.

"Wash, as he was familiarly called, married a widow Smith, from the near village of Royalton, who brought several children by her previous marriage to grace his home. These all grew to manhood and womanhood, and won for themselves honorable places in the world.... Later in life, Wash built himself a commodious house on the site of the prior Seltzer blacksmith shop.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 29a.
