1926 - LANCASTER DAILY EAGLE, Lancaster, Ohio, May 1, 1926, front page
Reports Gunman Again After Her - Mrs. C. M. Foor, living on the Egypt Road near Lithopolis, reported today noon to Prosecuting Attorney Dutton that she had been again the arget of the mysterious midnight gunman, who, according to her story has made several nocturnal visits to the farm home of herself and family for the purpose of firing a gun at her. She exhibits two bullet holes in her left hand as the only success his marksmanship has so far enjoyed.

1926 - LANCASTER DAILY EAGLE, Lancaster, Ohio, May 6, 1926, front page
WOMAN IN LITHOPOLIS SHOOTING MYSTERY HAS COUSIN ARRESTED - RAY THRASH ACCUSED MAN DENIES CHARGES - Says He Can Establish Alibi. Sensational Forgery Case of Some Years Ago, Looms in Background Of Mystery. Claiming that he is the mysterious gunman who has four times paid midnight visits to her home near Lithopolis for the purpose of attempting to murder her, Mrs. Hazel Foor of the Egypt road, has had her cousin, Ray Thrash, 20, arrested, charged with shooting with intent to kill

Thrash was arrested yesterday at Columbus, was brought to Lancaster by Sheriff McNaghten and Prosecuting Atty. Dutton, and was released under $500 bond when he plead not guilty, this morning, in Justice Boerstler's court, where he was arrianged. Boerstler will hold Thrash's hearing at 9 a.m. next Tuesday. Thrash's bond was furnished by his father and R. L. MEIER. C. O. Beals is his attorney.

Thrash lived on the Slough road, near the Foor residence, until a week or two ago, when he held a sale of his property and household goods, after which he moved to Columbus and secured employment with the municipal light company. Thrash told Sheriff McNaghten that he was in no way connected with the shootings, that he could prove an alibi for every night when the shootings are said to have occurred, and that the charges which Mrs. Foor filed against him are the result of spitework.

Thrash also claimed that Mrs. Foor incited the residents of the vicinity against him and made it dangerous for him to remain there so he moved to Columbus.

According to Mrs. Foor's story, the farm home which she, her husband, and their four young sons reside, has been the scene of Thrash's noctural visits four times since February, and that each time her cousin has attempted to shoot her, only once being successful, when, on the night of March 17th, her left hand was twice pierced with bullets. The most recent visit was last week.

Until this week, Mrs. Foor would not file charges against Thrash, although she seems to have believed him guilty since the first shooting. For a year previous to that she says she received letters threatening her life. After one of the mysterious shootings, Thrash was taken into custody by the sheriff and released when the investigation revealed no evidence sufficient for arrest.

As a background for the mystery of the midnight shootings, is the story of a sensational forgery trial which several years ago involved both of the principals of the present case. A number of forged checks were passed in Columbus, the name of Thrash's father being used by the forger. The young man was called home from the west and held under suspicion, but released when the merchants who cashed the checks said that they were received from a woman instead of a man. Mrs. Foor was arrested and said to have been identified as that woman, but acquitted when handwriting experts declared that she had not signed the checks.

Mrs. Foor had said that the attacks were motivated by a family quarrel of long standing.

1926 - LANCASTER DAILY EAGLE, Lancaster, Ohio, May 25, 1926 - Lithopolis Shooting Recalled. This is the second instance of mysterious shooting, former attempts on the life of Mrs. C. M. Foor having taken place periodically since January of this year. Mrs. Foor, who lives on a farm near Lithopolis, sustained two bullet wounds in her left hand in one of the mysterious nocturnal attempts on her life. Effort to find the phantom gunman haave so far been in vain, a recent suspect having been exonerated of the charges brought by Mrs. Foor. [Note: this is the second part on a front page article about another mysterious shooting; Attempts to Kill Mrs. Frank Arter].

PONTIOUS, one of Salt Creek township's representative Men and old and honored citizens, has resided on his present farm of 102 acres, situated in section 31, for almost a half century, coming here in 1858. He belongs to a family which came very early to Ohio, bringing his habits of Pennsylvania thrift. He was born in Ross County, January 8, 1832, and is a son of Andrew and Mary (Betzer) Pontious. The grandfather of Peter B. Pontious was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and removed thence to Ross County, Ohio, where he engaged in farming in Green township.

Andrew Pontious was born in Ross County, Ohio, was there engaged in farming all his life, and died there in February, 1880. He married Mary Ann Betzer, who was also born in Ross County, and they had 12 children. the six survivors being: John R., of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Frederick B., of Lawrence, Kansas; Peter B., of this sketch; Jane, wife of Reuben May, of Ross County, Ohio; Sarah, wife of Martin Socin, of Chillicothe; and Andrew J., of Salt Creek township.

Peter B. Pontious spent boyhood and youth in Ross County, attending the best schools in his neighborhood, and learning the practical facts about farming and stock-raising on his father's farm. Agricultural pursuits have continued to be his business and pleasure all his life and his well-cultivated farm testifies to the careful tillage it has received.", "History of Pickaway Co., Ohio, and Representative Citizens", Van Cleaf, 1906, p 490.

[T106033] NAME: From his email in May 2007. "I have pretty much lost contact with the Foors in PA. When I was a kid we used to travel to Everett from Morgantown to visit his brothers Milt, Marsh, and Blaine. Milt and Marilla had a son "Jay" and last I had heard they went to Florida. I don't know anything about Jay's kids. Jay, for a time, had taken over his Dad's farm. Marsh, I believe, had a gas station. Their youngest sister was Mary. She had a son Paul who at the time was in the Army. I've lost track of him as well."
