INDEX

[7276] Fred D. Arnold, a well known resident of Womelsdorf, Pa., who is engaged in the undertaking business, and also carries on cigar making, was born Feb. 12, 1871, in Womelsdorf, son of William and Lizzie (Stettler) Arnold.

Martin Arnold, the progenitor of the Arnold family in Berks county, was a native of Germany and emigrated to America on the brigantine "Mary", which arrived at Philadelphia, Aug. 25, 1752. In 1759 he had settled in Heidelberg township, and in that year paid a federal tax of $7.98, or three pounds. It appears that he was married before his emigration. Among his children were: John had sons, Isaac, Daniel, William. Samuel, John, Henry and Amos; Jacob; and Rebecca married to Daniel Schneider.

Jacob Arnold, son of Martin, was born July 10, 1787, and died Jan. 15, 1850, aged sixty-two years, six months, five days. He was a brick-layer by trade, and built a house on Second street, Womelsdorf, where he died, and he was buried in the borough. Mr. Arnold saw service in the war of 1812, and was a good and upright citizen. He married Christmas Day, 1812, Eve Catherine Fidler, born in 1790, who died in Fairfield county, Ohio, in her eighty-fourth year. To them were born seven children: Eli died at Womelsdorf; Harry died in Fairfield county, Ohio; Lovina married Benjamin Peifer, and died in Marion township; Jacob married Catherine Moore, daughter of William Moore, of Reading, and died at Womelsdorf; Mary Ann married Fred Killis (whose father came from Germany and lived and died in Womelsdorf); William; and Daniel, twin of William, died in Fairfield county, Ohio, in 1905. All of the family is deceased, except for William who still lives in Womelsdorf.

Query posted on GenForum Feb., 1999; "I am searching for information on John Cain b.1841 in Kentucky. He married Mary Elizabeth Foor and they were in Breckinridge Co, KY in 1880. Their children were: Clarence, Ida Bernice, Beatrice, Thomas, Annie, Alice, Gloria, Jodie, Elsie May, Jimmie Gus, John H., and Wilbur. John may be the son of William Cain of Breckinridge Co. but I can't make the connection. Any information greatly appreciated. " by Sheila Brennan.

"John H. Cain, Bosque County, Texas. Cain served the entire war in Co. A. His widow's pension request in 1914 showed he was found on the roster when he joined in Sep 1861, and was on the roster in 1864 when he surrendered in Alabama. He was paroled in Mississippi. Cain was born in Breckinridge Co, Kentucky, and was the nephew of Benjamen Dowell, the first mayor of El Paso. He returned to Kentucky after the war and married Mary Foor. He spent the rest of his life in Breckinridge, Meade, and Jefferson Counties in Kentucky, and died in 1903. His widow was granted a pension from the state of Kentucky based on his service with Terry's Rangers.", from a website, now defunct, called "Terry's Texas Ranger's; The Men".

HOLMES, SARAH [Newcastle Township]
BIOGRAPHY
Sarah Holmes. - Mrs. Sarah Holmes, the subject of this sketch, is the daughter of Henry Haimbaugh, Sr., mentioned elsewhere in this work. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, November 13, 1833. She lived on the farm with her parents, obtaining such an education as she could acquire in the common schools of her native vicinity, until, in her eighteenth year, she was united in marriage, on August 17, 1851, to Andrew J. Holmes, of Richland County, Ohio. Mr. Holmes was born May 2, 1830, and was educated in his native county. Upon the call of his country, he entered the service when but a mere boy, and did valuable service in the conflict with Mexico. In 1855, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes immigrated to Fulton County, Ind., and located in Newcastle Township, where Mr. Holmes purchased eighty acres of land and engaged in farming. They both united with the Yellow Creek Baptist Church, of which she is still an acceptable member. Mr. H. was quite a prominent man in the history of his adopted county from his first settlement therein, and in the year 1858 was elected County Auditor, and re-elected in 1862, occupying that position eight years. Mr. Holmes was an active, energetic, business man, and was favorably known as a member of the orders of Masonry and Odd Fellowship, occupying prominent positions in these orders at home, and also in their Grand Lodge. On the 26th of April, 1869, he was acting as Marshal in an Odd Fellows anniversary celebration, when he was thrown from his horse and severely injured, from the effects of which he died two days later, universally lamented. His kind disposition, undoubted integrity, great business qualities and close identity with the interests of his county, made his death a great calamity. He had accumulated quite a large estate, the most of which is retained in the family by the industry and good management of Mrs. H. To these parents were born seven children--Clara A., Mary L., Obadiah, Ella, an infant son deceased at the age of two weeks, John B. and Nora. Clara and Obadiah have since deceased, and Mary and Ella are married, while John and Nora are yet under the maternal roof.
[T. B. Helm, Fulton County Atlas, A. L. Kingman, 1883, p. 49]

Rochester Standard, Rochester, IN., Thursday, May 6, 1869.

"The funeral of A. J. Holmes, whose death was noticed last week, took place from the residence of the deceased on Saturday, the 1st day of May, under the supervision of the Masonic Fraternity, assisted by order of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Firemen. Notwithstanding the day was uncomfortably cold, and rain fell incessantly almost, by 10 o'clock the streets were crowded with friends from the country and neighboring towns. At the hour the stores, offices and business houses, of the citizens were closed. The funeral procession was formed in the following order, and passed from the late residence of the deceased to the Baptist Church 1st, Rochester Silver Band, 2d, Hook & Ladder protection company in full uniform, 3d, Independant Order of odd Fellows in full regalia, 4th, Masonic Order, in full regalia, 5th, Hearse bearing the remains of the deceased, accompanied by pall bearers, 6th, Carriage containing the relations and friends of the deceased, 7th, strangers and citizens. Arriving at the Church the near relatives of the deceased and a considerable number of members of the order, gained admittance, while the greater portion of them together with citizens were compelled to seek shelter elswhere, as the Church could not hold but a tithe of the vast concourse of people. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Lamb.

After the services at the Church, the procession was reformed in the same order, and passed down main street, to millcreek street, and into the Odd Fellows grave yard, the Band meanwhile playing a Solemn Dirge. All present, was duly impressed with the solemnity of the occasion, and many were the regrets expressed at the untimely death, and irreparable loss of one of Rochester's most gifted, and highly esteemed citizens."

[29059] 1967 - Car Plunges into Creek, Five Persish - Circleville, Ohio - A 36-year-old woman learning how to drive hit the accelerator instead of the brake at an intersection north of here Tuesday night, sending the car plummeting into a rain swollen creek. She and her four children drowned. Her husband, who was teaching her, survived. Vester Phillips, 31, of rural Ashville told authorities he jumpe from the car before it submerged completely in Big Walnut Creek, then tried to rescue his wife and children. But swift current force him to leave the water, he said. Sheriff's deputies recovered the bodies of Ruby Phillips, 36, and sons Gary, 7, and Donald, 3. Bodies of the other two youngsters, Diana 11 and Wendell, 9, could not be found in nearly five hours of searching by scuba divers. Additional divers resumed the search this morning. At one point during the search for bodies, a distraught Phillips, who suffered only minor physical injuries, tried to jump back into the water. He was restrained by sheriff's deputies and onlookers. A shaken Phillips told of climbing back to the road hysterically and trying to flag down four cars that passed. None stopped, he said. Finally, a farmer who lives nearby heard Phillips' shouts. He turned in the first report to authorities. [Athens Messenger, Athens, Ohio, May 17, 1967]

Death: have death certificate

Resided in Henry and Lucas Co.'s of OH
1st married to Sarah Yawberg and had one child, Clara. Both deceased before
marrying Emma. Clara had committed suicide because housekeeper (hired after
mother's death) was molesting her--or so we've been able to ascertain from
local newspaper stories.

Buried: with first wife Sarah

Census: 1880 Washington Twp/Henry Co. OH p 58; occupation: working on farm.
1900 Washington Twp/Henry Co OH (p 287A) listed as widowed, dau Clara b Mar
1890 OH, and Catharine Winan b Apr 1871 29y b OH living with them as
housekeeper. 1910 census Providence Twp./Lucas Co OH. Uncertified copy of death
certificate.
Died at hospital of gangrene in right foot and had leg removed
at mid-thigh. Had been residing at time of death @ 600 S. Detroit, Toledo, OH.
Certificate shows marital status as divorced. Family stories indicate he had
remarried after he divorced 2nd wife. Supposedly left and went "out west"
where he built many bridges and roads. He was a wealthy man at one time, and
an intelligent man when it came to his work. He returned after "many years" to Grand Rapids, OH and lived out the rest of his life with his daughter Emma.
Stories say he came back penniless. Family lore also states he was a"womanizer". According to one source, after he returned he use to plant and
grow vegetables, and hunt opossum. He had an old dirty knife that he used to
clean his opossums with. One day he used the knife to clean his toenails and
apparently cut one of his toes. Gangrene set in. The daughter he was living
with was a nurse, but she apparently didn't see or notice. By the time it was noticed the gangrene had spread too much to save him, even after amputating the one leg.

3rd wife's name is unknown at this time, although the information is known
elsewhere in this family.

OBIT: [Decatur Daily Review, Decatur, IL, May 21 1925]
"Mrs. Delilah Foor Passes Away at home of Daughter, Mrs. H. M. Tallman. Was
ill but five days. "Well known woman had lived near Tower Hill for Many Years. Funeral at First Methodist Church here Friday Afternoon -- Interment in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Delilah Foor, for many years well known and highly esteemed resident of
Tower Hill, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. M. Tallman, on
West Main street, at four o'clock Wednesday morning after a brief illness from pneumonia. She had been ill but 5 days.

Mrs. Foor was born in Ohio on December 31, 1846 and passed away on May 20,
1925, aged 79 years 4 months and 20 days. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Daniel Swander. She came to Illinois from ohio 53 years ago. In 1862 she was united in marriage with Jesse W. Foor and to this union nine children were born, 8 of whom survive. Mr. Foor passed away on May 20, 1916. The children are Mrs. H. M. Tallman of Shelbyville, E. E. Foor, C. E. Foor, Mrs. Sadie Cullumber, Mrs. Lulu Sibbett, J. L. Foor, W. H. Foor and C. W. Foor, all of Tower Hill. A son, W. Fred Foor, passed away a number of years ago. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Maria Hutton of Maroa, a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years she had been a member of the Robinson Creek Methodist church.

Funeral services will be conducted in the First Methodist church in Shelbyville at 2:30 Friday afternoon. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

NOTE: Obit says she was born Dec. 31, 1846. If you take her death date and subtract her age at death listed in the obit -- 79y 4m 20d -- it comes out to being Dec. 30, 1945. That's three different dates of birth for her. The other is from baptismal records saying she was born 31 Dec 1844.
