Shelby Farmer Dies of Burns from Coal Oil - Shelbyville. Arthur Reichart, a farmer who lived near Westervelt, died at the Shelby County Memorial hospital at 10:40 o'clock Monday, from burns which he received when he used coal oil in starting a fire. The fire didn't burn up as he desired and he added the oil which immediately caused an explosion, scattering the oil, which caught fire, all over his clothing. He ran into the yard and would have re-entered the house, then a mass of flames, but for his wife's interference. Mrs. Reichart with the four children jumped from an upstairs window when the fire spread over the lower rooms and prevented Mr. Reichart from entering. Mr. and Mrs. Reichart went to the home of Otto Sands, Mrs. Reichart's father. A doctor came and Mr. Reichart was rushed to the hospital. Arthur Reichart was born in Brunswick 41 years ago, the son of James and Elizabeth Reichart. He was united in marriage to Lesta Sands in 1907. Four children were born to this union, two dying in infancy and two still living, Juanita Maude and Audrey, two and three years old, respectively. Two girls, Grace and Frances, were adopted when they were small. [Decatur Review, Decatur, IL, March 13, 1928]
Wife Too Ill to Attend Funeral - Rites for Arthur Reichart Held Tuesday - Shelbyville. March 14. Funeral services for Arthur Reichart, who died Monday from burns received when he was attempting to light a fire at his home near Westervelt, were conducted from the Christian church by Rev. O. P. Wright, Tuesday afternoon. Interment was in Brunswick. The Reichart home was totally destroyed by fire. Mrs. Reichart who jumped from an upper window with the children was too ill to attend the funeral of her husband. [Decatur Review, Decatur, IL, March 14, 1928]
