Howard T. Mellott
Born-again Christian was retired auto body mechanic

Howard T. Mellott of 719 Charlotte Ave., Hermitage, passed away of natural causes at 10:20 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System after a sudden illness. He was 84.

Mr. Mellott was born July 25, 1922, in Hopewell, Pa., a son of the late Chester A. and Mary Foor Mellott.

He was educated at the former Yellow Creek Schoolhouse in Cypher, Pa., and served with the Army in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Mellott was considered to be one of the best auto body mechanics in the area and retired in 1985 from Bissett Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Mercer. He previously worked at Ken's Auto Body, Sharpsville; Pete's Auto Body, Hermitage; Dan's Auto Body, Masury; the former Baglier's Cadillac, Sharon; and Barris' in West Middlesex. He was also self-employed as an auto body mechanic.

Mr. Mellott was a born-again Christian and a member of Sharon Baptist Church, Hermitage. He previously was a member and deacon at the former Evangel Baptist Church in Sharon, where he drove the church bus to pick up parishioners for Sunday services. Upon its closing, he joined the former Victory Baptist Church, also Sharon, where he was a deacon. He belonged to the Tuesday morning prayer breakfast group at First United Methodist Church in Sharpsville.

An outdoorsman, Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing and throwing horseshoes; and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Janet G. Reffner, whom he married July 27, 1946, at home; four daughters, Loretta Gongloff and her husband John, Mercer; Rose Mary Morris and her husband Tom, West Middlesex; Laurie Daugherty, Mercer, and her fiancé Kevin Mulhall, Niles, Ohio; and Tracy Mellott, at home; two sons, Howard T. Mellott, Jr. and his wife Sandra, Lackawannock Township; and Martin D. Mellott and his wife Pamela, Hermitage; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Hinish, Rosetta Steele, Florence Wimer and Louise Hicklin; a brother, Carl Mellott; and a granddaughter, who died at birth.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Baptist Church, 1531 George St. Extension, Hermitage 16148; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
