"Philip Powell came to Hancock County, Ohio, in 1834. He married Elizabeth Fellers, a cousin to John and Henry Powell's wives. He was the father of four children, one of whom is dead. he died in 1866. His grandchildren number thirteen living and three dead." Powell, John,. Authentic genealogical memorial history of Philip Powell of Mifflin Co., Pa.. : and his descendants and others, with miscellaneous items and incidents of interest. Dayton, Ohio: Published for the author, 1880, p 73.
"Philip Powell, son of Peter Powell, was born in Mifflin County, PA., July 1st, 1809. He came to Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1814 and went to Hancock County, Ohio, in 1834. He was married Feb. 22d, 1836, to Elizabeth Fetters, daughter of Peter Fetters. She was born Dec. 25, 1815. They had three children; namely Joshua, born Oct. 27, 1836; Peter H., born July 17, 1838; Simon, born July 21st, 1840. The latter now lives in Nevada.
"Elizabeth Powell died March 6, 1841; and April 15, 1842, Philip Powell was married to Susannah Tussing, daughter of Christopher Tussing. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, April 20, 1818, and came to Hancock County, Ohio, where she was married. She had one child, Moses Powell, who was born February 19th, 1854, and died March March, 1854. Susannah Powell died September 25, 1857, after a lingering illness. In 1861 Mr. Powell was married to his third wife, Magdalene Feasle; and on August 29th, 1866, he died, aged 57 years, 1 month and 28 days. He and his wife were faithful members of the Evangelical Association. He now lies beside his two sainted wives in the Powell Cemetery, Eagle Twp., Hancock County, Ohio.
"It may be interesting to state how Philip became a shoe-maker. He had an impediment in his speech from childhood, which made it difficult for him to talk, being naturally timid. Although a sensible young man, he had but little to say in strange company, and especially to the fairer sex. The youn men in his day, when they turned their attention to the young ladies, wanted fine boots to wear; so when Peter Powell's boys began to keep comany with the 'lovely ones', their father bought boots for all but Philip, thinking that as he was so shy of company he did not need any. But Philip did not like that idea. He thought he had as good a right to wear fine boots as the rest of the boys, even if he did not 'run after the girls'. Seeing that his father would not buy him any, and having no money with which to buy them, he made up his mind that there was more than one way of getting a pair; so one day he asked his father for the leather to make a pair of boots. His father, having no thought of his son undertaking such a job, told him that if would make them himself he might have the leather which he had on hand. Philip said no more but started off. He went to a shoe-shop and watched a man making a pair of fine boots. Then he asked the man if he would be kind enough to lend him his tools a few days, as he wanted to make himself a pair of fine boots. The shoe-maker, thinking he would see some fun, told Philip he might have all he wanted. So he took the tools and started home; and before his father was aware of it, Philip had his boots cut out, and was busy at work. In due time he had them done, and had the 'good luck' of making a nice fit, which made him feel real proud. He was always ready to exhibit them, as they were really better than those the other boys had.Source: Original data: Powell, John,. LOCATION: 1944 - In father's Decmeber obit, she's listed as : Father of... "A. B. Weiser, Supt. of Canal Winchester schools".
"Ardrie Brighton Weiser, superintendent of schools at Canal Winchester, is an educator of high attainments and possessive character, and represents an old family of Fairfield county.
"He was born at Greencastle in Fairfield County, March 21, 1890. He is a descendant of the same family as Conrad Weiser, who figured in some of the earliest traditions in the Northwest Territory as an Indian interpreter. A momument has been erected to his memory at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The father of Ardrie B. Weiser is calvin W. Weiser, formerly a public school teacher in Bloom Township of Fairfield County and later a merchant at Greencastle. The mother as Mary (Boyer) Weiser, daughter of Marquis Boyer, a farmer of Jefferson, Ohio.
"A brother of A. B. Weiser is a chemist of national distinction. Harry Boyer Weiser, who was also born at Greencastle, received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cornell University in 1914 and since 1915 has been identified with the Rice Institute at Houston, Texas, where he is head of the chemistry department. He was captain in the Chemical Warfare Service during the World War and has been an associate editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry.
"Ardrie Brighton Weiser was graduated from the Lithopolis High School in 1910, took his Bachelor of Arts degree at Ohio State University in 1914 and by post-graduate work at intervals of his teaching career earned the Master of Arts Degree at Columbia, University in 1918 and has since then completed work leading up to the doctor's degree at the Ohio State University. Mr. Weiser became connected with the schools at Canal Winchester in Franklin Co., in 1914, being teacher in the hight schools the first two years, was principal of the high school from 1916-18, and since the latter year has been superintendent of the city schools.
"He is not only a scholar but a man of broad interest in the welfare of his community. He has done much work in Sunday schools, having at one time been superintendent of the Sunday school of the Presbyterian church in his native town of Greencastle, and at Canal Winchester has taught in the Sunday school of the United Brethren Church. Reared a democrat, he has like many educated men sought to make his vote most effective by frequently supporting men and measures not completely identified with his own party. He is a Chapter Mason and has held minor offices in the Royal Arch Chapter and is also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Grange.
"In June, 1919, he married Miss Hazel Codner. Her father, William Codner, for thirty-six years was a telegraph operator with the Hocking Valley Railway, spending most of the time at Canal Winchester.
