1917 - Thornville - The friends of Benjamin Alspach will be pleased to know he was able to return home Wednesday. Mr. Alspach visited his daughter at Springfield and was taken sick while there but is doing nicely at this time. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Jan. 24, 1917]

1925 - Thornville - Benjamin Alspach has been ill the past week. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Jan. 25, 1921]

DOD/POD: Name listed as Benjamin Alspach, died June 9, 1922, Perry Co., Ohio. Ancestry.com and Ohio Department of Health. Ohio Deaths, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2002 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2006.

"Angeline A. Zartman taught school in her young womanhood. On Nov. 29, 1868, in St. Paul's Church, Glenford, she married Benjamin Alspach. They own a large farm at Thornville, Ohio, but at present live in their home in the town of Thornville. Ancestry.com. The Zartman family [database on-line]. Provo, UT: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: Zartman, Rufus Calvin.. The Zartman family. Philadelphia: Lyon & Armor, 1909, p 112.

Another Zartman text shows that Angeline married "Benjamin Alspach of Thornville, Thorn Twp., Ohio. Benjamin Alspach b 1/5/1847 was the son of Jesse, son of Sebastian Alspach." Ancestry.com. The Zartman family [database on-line]. Provo, UT: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: Zartman, Rufus Calvin,. The Zartman family. Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Publishing Co., c1942, p 71. I believe the mention of Jesse's father to be Sebastian is incorrect.

SOURCE: "Portrait and Biographical Album of Champaign County, Illinois," Chapman Brothers, Chicago, 1887

EPHRAIM DRESBACH, an enterprising farmer and stock-grower of St. Joseph Township, is possessor of an estate containing 120 acres of valuable land located on section 20. He was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, near Lithopolis, Nov. 12, 1834, and is descended from German and Irish ancestry, being the son of John and Anna (HOY) DRESBACH, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio. John DRESBACH was born in 1804. His wife, Anna, was the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (IRELY) HOY. The Irely family were natives of Pennsylvania, but of Irish origin, and the family of Philip HOY descended from German ancestry.

After his marriage John Dresbach lived for a time in Fairfield County, Ohio, and then removed with his family to Hancock County, settling near Findlay. Not satisfied with the locality, he changed his residence to Fairfield, and afterward to Pickaway County, making the latter place a permanent settlement, and building up a homestead, where he died in the winter of 1886. He was twice married. The death of his first wife occurred in Fairfield County, in 1844. Of this union six children were born, and of the second marriage there were three.

Ephraim Dresbach passed his boyhood in Fairfield and Pickaway Counties, where he received such education as could be obtained at the country schools. After the death of his mother he made his home with relatives and began the struggle of life at a very early age. Possessing an obliging disposition he made friends, and employed himself in various branches of farm labor until he had reached his twenty-fourth year. He then united in marriage with Miss Clarissa E. CRONINGER, a native of Pickaway County, Ohio, and the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (HINES) CRONINGER. After his marriage Mr. Dresbach settled on a farm in Pickaway County, and remained there until the autumn of 1867, when he removed with his family to Champaign County, Ill. The first year he rented a farm in St. Joseph Township, and subsequently purchased his present place. Only a part of the land was broken, but he has since brought it to a fine state of cultivation. He is engaged in general farming and stock-raising, giving special attention to the raising of hogs.

Mr. and Mrs. Dresbach had a family of ten children, eight of whom are living, and recorded as follows: Elnora S. is the wife of Theodore F. Swearingen; Joseph F. is residing at home; Chrissie B. is the wife of O. Hootz; Clara L., Alma May, Arthur C., Minnie O. and Ora A. are with their parents.

In politics Mr. Dresbach reserves the right of voting for the best man, regardless of party. He is interested in public affairs, and has served as School Director, giving satisfaction in the discharge of his duties.

MIDDLE NAME/POBurial: From Luree Kathryn (Foor) Barber, Quinebaug, CT, July 2003 email.

"Claude was a multi faceted man, and had a wide assortment of friends and family His nieces and nephews thought he was perfect. He cut their hair gave them advice and understanding. As his daughter, I have no idea where he learned to cut hair.
He was a very good musician, he gave piano lessons when in his teens and early twenties. He could play almost any instrument he picked up, but was very good and like to play piano, violin, and piccolo. I remember when I brought my clarinet home from school for the first time, he picked it up and played it as if he had always played one. I am not sure when he got his first car, but it was before 1930, and he was in love with it and all the rest that followed it. Every Sunday, he would make the long trip form
Monroe to Ohio (all 20 to 30 miles) with the family to see some of his or Ottie's brothers and sister, and their children.
Claude belonged to all the Masonic Lodges in Monroe and many other places including Canada. He became the head master, commander and the one in charge of all those orders he joined , including the Eastern Stars. He started Rainbow girls in Monroe so that I would belong to a Masonic group when I was young." From Luree Kathryn (Foor) Barber, Quinebaug, CT, July 2003 email.

1917 - Presiding in probate court today Judge Freeman dismissed for want of jurisdiction claims by B. F. Stoltey, Elizabeth Wnedling Stoltey and the First Church of Christ Scientist against the estate of Amanda C. Koch, late of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Stoltey, who are practitioners in the Christian Science church, presented claims aggregating $140 for readings conducted at the bedside of Mrs. Koch during her last illness. Mrs. Hoy, daughter of Mrs. Koch and administrator of the estate, is a Christian Scientist and was willing to pay for the readings. The other daughter, Mrs. Mahalah Birdzell of Champaign is a non-believer in that faith however, and refused to sign a chock jointly with mrs. Hoy against the estate's account in the Citizens bank of Champaign. The readers and the church then presented three claims against the estate which were disposed of by Judge Freeman today. OBIT: Mr. Wm. J. MONTGOMERY, one of the most prominent and enterprising farmers of Newcastle township, died at an early hour yesterday morning. The deceased was a worthy and well known citizen in the community in which he lived, highly esteemed by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was but 35 years of age, never very robust and when severely attacked with lung fever he was forced to yield to its power over his physical strength. His funeral will take place today from Bloomingsburg and his remains will be deposited in the Richter cemetery. [Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, IN, Feb. 11, 1882]

1915 - GOLDEN MILESTONE is reached by Prosperous Bloom Township Couple, Sunday, Feb 21st. Fiftieth Wedding Anniversaty Celebrated by Happy Family Reunion, Sumotuous Feast Prominent Feature. At their country home one mile east of Greencastle, Mr. and Mrs. George W. RUBLE on Sunday entertained their children and grandchildren in recognition of their 50th wedding anniversary, the occasion was not only a grand success but a very happy one as well. Geo. W. Ruble and Sarah G. Ingman were married at Lancaster February 20, 186[6?] at the residence of Rev. Sparks. They were not affraid to work, so took up their labors with a smile. By the strictest economy and good management they made steady gain in the accumulations of this world's goods. They became prosperous farmers. These good folks, now 79 and 71 years old respectively have proved that plain country life is a good one to live. The family circle has been broken by the death of their oldest daughter, Mrs. Ervin Kiger, who passed away in the year 1900. A lovely three course dinner was served at high noon to which all did justice. The children and grandchildren presented the aged couple with two handsome rocking chairs for their comfort during their leisure hours, also a lovely bouquet of carnations. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ruble, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ruble, sons George and Marion; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Kiger and daughters Dora, Cora, Leona, and Arleta, all of Lancaster; Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Ruble and daughter Retha and son Denver. Mr. and Mrs. Felix Ruble all of Greencastle; Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Alspaugh and daughter Dorothy and son Paul of Canal Winchester. Miss Hortense Strode of Columbus. All were presnt but Samuel Ruble and family. All departed wishing to meet on many more happy occasions. [written by] One Who Was There.
