OCCUPATIONS on William H. FOOR appears to be a foreman at "state---"?, Carrie is a laundress, and ____ TRAVIS is at school. The only relationship shown for William H. is a 'boarder'. It appears that the young boy is actually William H.'s bro-in-law, not George L.'s. I'm assuming, too, that William H. may be a brother to George L. because of the dates of birth, though one individual shows his father was born in TN, the other one shows IA.

[T10619] NAME/DOB/DOBap/Parentage: "Churchbooks of the Betzer Union/Zion Reformed Church, 1817-1881, Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1994, p 27. Baptised same day as Peter Powell, son of Daniel and Elizabeth.

DOD/POBurial: Green Lawn Cemetery Burials, "The Fleshman Files", online website March 2006. Name listed as Mary Catharine Stallsmith, 3/19/1838-01/08/1920. Date of birth is same, year is one year off of baptismal records.

DOD/POD: Name listed as Mary C. Stallsmith, V #3158 Cert. #2160. "Ohio Death Certificate Index, 1913-1944", Ohio Historical Society, online ohiohistory.org.

To begin, I only had this info:

"Rosannah [REAM] was born 27 Apr 1826; was married to Wm. Stallsmith. Their
children are John F., who married Mary P. WELSH, William H., who married Emma
Crumley; Catherine Elizabeth, who died young; Charles Edwin, who died in
infancy; Emma C., who married Henry Zangmeister; Joseph L. wedded Minnie
Courtright; Frank L. died young; Minnie and Callie S. are twins... the first
married J. Luther Faler, and the latter Frank Sallee". "History of Fairfield
County and Representative Citizens", Charles C. Miller, 1912, p 333.

I cannot find John and Mary together on any census. I did, however, find some possible connections leading me to believe WELSH was not Mary's maiden name, and that the "P" shown as her middle initial in the above bio is actually for her maiden name of POWELL.

In 1870, Jesse Benson has a Mary Powell residing with him:

CENSUS: 1850 Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH - family #1752
BENSON, Jesse 41 farmer b MD
", Hannah 35 b PA
", Benjamin 14 b OH
", Abram 12 b OH
", Mary 11 b OH
", John 9 b OH
", Hannah 7 b OH
", Ellen 1 b OH
POWELL, Mary 13 b OH

In 1870, he has Mary Stallsmith and some WELSH children:

DOM/POM: John F. Stallsmith and Mollie Welsh, Nov. 3, 1867. "Fairfield County, Ohio Marriages, V III, 1852-1868", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 2006.

CENSUS: 1870 Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH; visitation 286/293
BENSON, Jesse, 61y farmer b MD
", Hanna, 54y keeping house b PA
", Barbara, 21y helps mother b OH
", Jacob, 19y farm laborer b OH
", Josina, 19y helps mother b OH
", Clara A., 13y attending school b OH
STALLSMITH, Mary, 33y "moontan maker" b OH
WELCH, William E., 8y attending school b OH
", Liddia B., 11y attending school b OH
", Henrietta, 6y attending school b OH

According to a querie posted on a message board, Jesse Benson's second wife's name was Hannah POWELL. Is POWELL her maiden name, or was it her prior married name? On further investigation, it appears POWELL was her MARRIED name, and that she was the widow of Peter Powel.

In 1858, there's a listing for a Henry WELCH who married Mary POWEL. Dodd, Jordan, Liahona Research, comp. Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900 [database online]. Provo, UT: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2001.

This could explain the WELCH children. Perhaps Mary POWEL(L) married Henry Welch, was widowed, then married John F. STALLSMITH.

In 1860, I found a Henry & Mary:

CENSUS: 1860 Amanda Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, visitation 22/22
WELCH, Henry, 24y farmhand b OH, $100 personal estate
", Mary K. or R., 22y b OH
", Lilly B., 7y b OH

This "Lilly B." child appears as one of the three WELCH children listed with Jesse Benson and Mary STALLSMITH in the 1870 census. Henry WELCH died in 1865 which would have, indeed, left her as a widow. After 1865 she must have married John F. Stallsmith.

CENSUS: 1870 Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH; visitation 286/293
BENSON, Jesse, 61y farmer b MD
", Hanna, 54y keeping house b PA
", Barbara, 21y helps mother b OH
", Jacob, 19y farm laborer b OH
", Josina, 19y helps mother b OH
", Clara A., 13y attending school b OH
STALLSMITH, Mary, 33y "moontan maker" b OH
WELCH, William E., 8y attending school b OH
", Liddia B., 11y attending school b OH
", Henrietta, 6y attending school b OH

CENSUS 1880 Groveport, FrankliN Co., OH; p 277A
STALLSMITH, Mary, 42y widow b OH, dressmaker, parents b PA
WELSH, Etta, dau 15y b OH, parents b OH

NOTE: I don't believe that Mary was widowed in 1870 and 1880. It appears that they were separated and/or divorced.

Death Certificate image. Mary Cathrine Stallsmith, #219 E. Rich St., Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, died Jan. 8, 1920 of apoplexy, aged 82y, widow of John Stallsmith, born March 19, 1838 in Fairfield Co., Ohio, parents unknown. Informant was Mrs. Lillie Evans of same address. Buried Green Lawn, Jan. 10.

1950 - Man Shoots Wife to Death after Argument, Then Ends Own Life.
Groveport, O. Sheriff's deputies said today Albert M. Brobst, 55, shot and
killed his wife, Laura, 52y late yesterday and killed himself with the same
.22-calibre gun. Mrs. June Hartman, daughter of the victims, said the
murder-suicide followed a short argument over Brobsts's going to town. Mrs.
Hartman said she heard her mother scream, "He shot me". "I ran to the kitchen
and saw her lying on the floor. He was standing by her feet reloading the
rifle," Mrs. Hartman added, "I asked him to give me the gun but he said "No,
leave me alone. It's gotta be this way". Mrs. Hartman said Brobst then shot
his wife again and she ran out to find a brother. When she returned she said
another brother had already found their father dead. Mrs. Hartman's
four-month-old son was lying in a baby bed less than 10 feet from the spot
the shooting occurred, deputies said." [Coshocton Tribune, Coshocton, Ohio,
July 1, 1950]

1988 - In loving memory of our dear parents, Albert and Laura Brobst, who
passed away June 30, 1950. Gone but not forgotten. Sadly missed by
children. [Columbus Dispatch, Columbus, Ohio, June 30, 1988]

[T3590]
REV: 6/18/98 - Found a Mollie K. FOOR, "w/o J. W.", b 21 Jan 1873 died 13 Oct
1894. Buried beside her is son Gilbert Earl. Lori's data showed Mollie was
born 21 Sep 1868. Although difference in birth year, (cemetery inscription
could be bad, too), I'm sure this is the same individual. Because of the date of birth of her son, and Mollie's date of death, she may have died from complications of child birth, as she died just a bit over a month after her son's birth.
