LOCATION: 1918 - Wednesday evening, April 24, the Misses Susan and Alice
Baugher of 125 South Grant AVenue, Columbus, opened their home from 6 to 10
to about fifty Columbus residents who were their fellow townsmen twenty years
ago in Lithopolis. The misses Baugher are granddaughters of Frederick
Baugher who founded the village in 1814 and the party had therefore,
something of a special interest to the guests. More than anything else,
however, it was a reunion of men and women who were once closely associated
in the village, but who since leaving it had seen each other and the
hostesses only very infrequently or not at all. As a consequence, the
renewing of former neighborly associations, the retelling of the old local
stories and the recreating of the old town atmostphere made up a most
important part of the evening's pleasure. Immediately after an excellent
lunch of ice cream, cake, sandwiches and coffee had been served, Mr. Edwin S.
Stotz called the group to order. In a pleasing and feeling manner Mr. Stotz
then presented the Misses Baugher with several tokens of the esteem in which
they are held by their former neighbors, this being the only part of the
program that had been kept secret from the hostesses. [Lancaster Daily Eagle,
Lancaster, Ohio, May 4, 1918]

We all know the cancer did NOT win as Lori is now in ALL HER GLORY with our heavenly Father. Lori's favorite Bible verse was Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." This verse was made apparent in Lori's lifeGod had a plan and Lori Trusted him. We will always thank God for blessing US with LORI, for blessing Lori and HER life, for HEARING her prayers. We will see you soon Sweet Lori Annie. Your love will always be in our hearts. Obituary written by family members

2-Year-Old Fatally Shoots Self
SMITH TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Police in Smith Township said a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself to death after finding a loaded gun.

According to police, emergency crews went to a mobile home at the Tecumseh Village Trailer Court on Lake Park Boulevard after a woman called 911 just after 9 a.m.

A neighbor performed CPR on 2-year-old Jacob D. Foor before EMS rushed him to Alliance Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a police report, the victim's father, Douglas Foor, is a part-time patrolman with the Minerva Police Department.

Police recovered a 9 mm handgun at the scene.

A tentative ruling by the Stark County coroner says the toddler died of a massive chest injury from a gunshot wound.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

LOCATION: 1925 - Shot to death in what the police believe to have been premeditated murder, Mrs. Aimee Curry, 38, proprietor of a rooming house at 336 Eighth street, died within a few hours after the release from jail of a man, whose arrest she caused following alleged threats on his part to kill her. A warrant charging murder was issued early this afternoon by the Oakland police department against Fuhr. Charles Schrieber, brother of the murdered woman, swore to the complaint. Jacob P. Fuhr, an inronworker at the Moore shipyards and a roomer at the Eighth street address, is being sought by the police today as the suspected murderer. Fuhr was seen entering the place about 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Curry was shot about 8:30 o'clock. She died from four bullet wounds at 10:30 o'clock last night at the Emergency Hospital. Fuhr was arrested Sunday night following Mrs. Curry's complaint that he had threatened to shoot her. An automatic pistol was found by the police in his room. He was released late yesterday afternoon on $1000 bail on a charge of disturbing the peace, when Mrs. Curry refused further to prosecute him.

James Martin, another roomer, saw Fuhr enter late yesterday afternoon, he informed the police. Four other roomers were with Martin at the time but they did not see Fuhr enter. Later, however, they heard the jealous quarrel which preceded the fatal shooting, Martin says. Fuhr was intoxicated, according to Martin. He went to the room he occupied for more than a year in the front part of the building. Shortly before 8 o'clock, Martin says, the sounds of Fuhr's voice reached him and his friends. For nearly half an hour, at frequent intervals, Fuhr could be heard abusing Mrs. Curry. She was apparently trying to quiet him and induce him to leave the house. Martin then heard Mrs. Curry running along the hallway toward the rear of the building. She cried out, "Oh, don't do that!" just as the first of six shots were heard. The heavier footfalls of a man were heard close behind Mrs. Curry, Martin told the police. When Martin and others rushed out to the hall, Mrs. Curry was lying with her head just accross the door sill, bleeding from several wounds in the upper part of her body.

Fuhr was not seen by anyone, but a pistol used, the police say, but the murderer, was discovered by Police Inspectors Arthur Sanderson and A. B. Stebbins in a rubbish can on the back landing. Edward, Mrs. Curry's six-year-old son, was in the front room when the quarrel started, but was sent out by Fuhr to buy some sandwiches just before the shooting began, he told police today. Fuhr had recently occupied a room directly back of the combined livingroom and office used by Mrs. Curry. Evidence discovered today shows that he had packed his belongings apparently with the intention of leaving the place. A door opened from the room occupied by Mrs. Curry and the boy into that used by Fuhr. Mrs. Curry and Fuhr had been seen out together frequently and he appeared to have great affection for the boy. Before the trouble Sunday there had been little difficulty between the two according to Martin and other roomers. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA, April 7, 1925]

LOCATION: 1925 - Jacob P. Fuhr, 35, who disappeared Monday night after the fatal shooting of Mrs. Aimee Curry, landlady of a rooming house at 336 Eighth street, confessed to the police, after his capture last night that he shot the woman in a jealous rage. He said he intended killing himself but found his pistol empty after slaying the woman. Fuhr told Captain of Detectives Richard McSorley that MRs. Curry and he had lived as man and wife for several months prior to a quarrel last Sunday. The woman then had him arrested for a threat he made against her, Fuhr says. He told the police that he went directly to a store on Broadway and purchased a pistol after his release from jail with the intention of killing Mrs. Curry. Upon arrival at the rooming house late in the afternoon, Fuhr says he started quarreling with the woman. He drew the gun and Mrs. Curry grappled with him. She then ran into the hall, where he shot her. Fuhr faces a charge of first degree murder. Fuhr told the police today that he is one of seventeen children. His home is in Alhson Park, Pa., where his mother, Mary Fuhr, now lives. His father is dead, he told the police. Mrs. Curry and Fuhr planned to get married shortly after Easter. August Fuhr, a brother, has wired the police that he is on his way from the Pennsylvania city to aid Fuhr in his defense. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA., April 8, 1925]

LOCATION: 1925 - Jacob Fuhr, 35, an iron worker, was held to answer in the superior court on a charge of murder after a hearing this morning before Police Judge William J. Hennessey. No bail was set by the court. Fuhr is alleged to have shot Mrs. Aimee Curry, proprietor of a rooming house at 336 Eighth street. Five bullets entered Mrs. Curry's body. The shooting took place about 8:30 o'clock on the night of April 6. Furh was arrested the following day and is said to have confessed killing the woman. He had been living at the Curry place for more than a year and told the police that he and Mrs. Curry had planned to marry. Floyd Rielly, a roomer at the house testified he met Furh the day after the murder. 'Is she dead" are the first words Fuhr spoke upon meeting him Rielly said. There were no eye witnesses to the shooting, according to the police inspectors who worked on the case. Fred Littleton, attorney for Fuhr, objected to admission of the alleged confession on theg rounds that it was obtained by the detective under duress. Police Inspector Alex Trotter testified the confession was dictated by Fuhr, written by Police Inspector George Burbank and signed by Fuhr in their presence. Judge Hennessey overruled the objection and the confession was admitted as evidence. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA., April 17, 1925]

LOCATION: 1925 - Slapped Suitor Goes on Trial for Murder - Jacob Fuhr, war veteran, who wrote on the wall of his room the quotation, 'He who gets slapped,' and then shot and killed Murs. Elsie Currie on April 1, last, it is alleged, today went to trial on a murder chuarge before Judge Fred V. Wood. He is being defended by Leo Sullivan and Frank K. Littleton, while Milton SEvier, chief deputy district attorney, and Deputy Carlisle Crosby are prosecuting. Selection of a jury began this afternoon. Fuhr was a boarder in Mrs. Currie's home, at 336 Eight street. He is alleged to have made a complete confession to the police that he shot Mrs. Currie because she had refused his love. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA., June 8, 1925]

LOCATION: 1925 - Jacob Fuhr was sentenced today to be hanged in San Quentin. Su....[crease in paper] pronounced the death sentence, took occasion to denounce capital punishment, at the same time declaring that under the law as it is at present and under the evidence in the case he had no alternative but to sentence Fuhr to death.... Fuhr must die on the gallows at San Quentin on Friday, September 18, for the murder of Mrs. Elsie Curry, with whome he had been living as her husband at a rooming house run by the woma n at 336 Eighth street. Judge Wood denied him a new trial, a motion for a stay of judgment and for a trial by jury to determine his sanity, that issue having been raised for the first time prior to the passing of sentencing. ..... With the conclusion of Judge Wood's remarks, Fuhr said, "Your Honor and everybody in this courtroom I wish to state right now if I am hung--gladly can I go to my death. But I still say this minute on the day of June 6 from 6 o'clock in the morning till I left the courtroom I absolutely know nothing of what was going on...."[Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA., June 24, 1925]
LOCATION: 1925 - "Oakland, Calif., June 24 - AP - In sentencing Jacob Fuhr to hang next September for the murder of a woman, Superior Judge Fred V. Wood today denounced the death penalty and said there was no real necessity for executing criminals to protect society. 'Justice is not vengeance', Judge Wood asserted. 'If the law be for vengeance, then society has put itself on the same ethical plane as the murderer. But I must sentence this man to death; I have no alternative'. [Helena Independent, Helena, MT., June 25, 1925]

LOCATION: 1926 - Led by Jacob Fuhr, convicted murderer, who has been sentenced to hang, five prisoners escaped from the county jail last night after slugging one jailor and locking him and his assistant behind bars. Ten minutes later, one of the five, Thomas Brown, serving six months for petty larcenty, surrendered himself to the desk sergeant at the Oakland city hall, spreading an alarm which sent Captain Frank Lynch and a reserve squad to the assistance of the sheriff's office.... Fuhr was sentenced to be hanged on September 18 last, but three days prior to the date set for the execution was granted a reprieve pending action on his appeal by the supreme court. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA, Jan 24, 1926]

LOCATION: 1926 - two of the five prisoners who escaped from the Alameda county jail on January 23, Ed Bridges and Louis Seccon, today were en route back to Oakland. Bridges and Secco, captured in Ponca, Okla., were identified by City Marshal Ed Peralta of San Leandro... With Bridges and Secco again in custody and Tom Brown having surrendered within an hour after the break, Jacob Fuhr, convicted murderer and leader of the escaping group, and Jack Sanders are the only fugitives still at large [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA, Feb. 11, 1926]

LOCATION: 1926 - ... the supreme court ruled yesterday that an appeal of Jacob Fuhr, escaped Alameda county murderer, would be dropped unless he is arrested within 30 days. [Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA., May 5, 1926]

LOCATION: 1926 - Jacob Fuhr, convicted murderer and only man of the five prisoners who escaped from the Alameda county jail January still at large, is faced with a dilemma. Word has been received from the state's attorney in Sacramento that unless he surrenders his unofficial freedom and returns to the county jail in 30 days his rights to a new trial and possible acquittal of the charges against him will be forfeited.

Foor. Would you happen to have other info on Alice and where she might be found. I'm related to Pepper but since a lot of the family was back in KY we lost contact after Pepper's father left. I'm trying to definitely establish his father's name. I've been told it was George Martin from KY. Pepper & my grandfather would have been first cousins."

NOTE: The obituary Pepper (John Leonard) Martin [New York Times, March 6, 1965] who died at age 61 and was a St. Louis Cardinal Star in the 30's, listed the following survivors: the widow Ruby, and three daus., Mrs. Alyne Cherry of Tulsa, Mrs. Jenny Lee Weathersby of Farmer's Beach, TX, and Mrs. Alice Foor of Blocker (Pittsburg Co., OK?) Pepper was b 29 Feb 1904 in Temple, OK.

NOT SURE if this is a child of Peter POWELL. PETER, in his seventies, is living in close proximity to known son George, and also close by (the next family to George) is this Daniel and his family.

Daniel Powell was born Feb. 7, 1811. He is a native of PA, and son of Peter and Mary (Alspaugh) Powell, natives of PA, and of German descent. Of 12 children of the family, seven still survive--Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Daniel, Mary (or Polly), Rebecca and George. The mother died in 1855, the father in 1861. Our subject was married June 14, 1832, to Eliza Beaty, of Fairfield County, Ohio. She was born in Northumberland County, Penn., December 14, 1809, to Alexander and Elizabeth (Toner) Beaty, who were the parents of nine children, only three of whom survive, namely, Sarah, Margaret and Bateman. The father died in 1827, the mother several years later. To Daniel and Eliza J. Powell were born five sons and three daughters-Bateman B., Mary A., Peter L., Sarah P., Alexandra B., Daniel N., Elizabeth A. and John W. The mother died October 24, 1878, at the age of sixty-eight years. Mr. Powell removed with his family from Fairfield County to this county, in August, 1864, and purchased land in Crawford Township, where he still lives with his son, John W. Powell, who now operates the farm, and who was married, February 18, 1875, to Mary C. Shuman, who was born in this township August 25, 1845. Her parents are Fred and Mary (Stahl) Shuman, who now reside in this township. This marriage was blessed by the birth of five sons-infant son, October, 1877; Clarence M., July 16, 1878; Freddie S.. September 16, 1880; Daniel L., August 27. 1882, all living but the infant son. John W. owns eighty-five acres, and
his father 110, all valued at $80 to $90 per acre. Daniel also owns forty acres in Hancock County, at about the same valuation. He was a resident of Fairfield County fifty years. He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church at Carey. John W. is a member of Carey Lodge, No. 407, IOOF, and of the Evangelical Church of the same place. His wife is a member of the Lutheran Church. Both he and his father are Democrats in politics. "HISTORY OF WYANDOT COUNTY, OHIO", Chicago, Leggett, Conaway & Co., 1884, p 794.

"Mr. Whitehurst chose Miss Mary Powell... daughter of Daniel Powell, of Bloom township. Her mother bore the maiden name of Eliza Beaty and both were natives of Pennsylvania, but in the early part of the centry they took up their abode in Fairfield county. Mr. Powell became an extensive and prosperous farmer of Bloom township. He died in his seventy-seventh year, while his wife passed away at the age of 71 years. He had severed his country in the Civl War and was ever a loyal and patriotic citizen. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Powell were born eight children, of whom seven are yet living: Bateman, Mary, Alexander, Sarah, Daniel, Elizabeth and John. Peter, who was the third in order of birth, is now deceased". "A Biographical Record of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, S. J. Clarke Pub., Co., 1902, pp 303-304.
