[T12671] DOB/Parentage/POB: HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD AND PERRY COUNTIES, OHIO, THEIR PAST AND PRESENT, Compiled BY A. A. Graham, W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883, p 319. "John B. Kramer... was married June 26, 1879 to Ella Newton, who was born in 1859, in Bloomfield, Pickaway Co., OH". John B. Kramer and brother George P. Kramer were merchants and editors of the Lithopolis "Home News".

DOD/POBurial/MIDDLE NAME: From Charlotte Hesselbrock via August 2001 email. (Note: Could not find Kramer's death in Ancestry.com. California Death Index, 1940-1997. "There was a lapse of seven years before another child was born. It was a boy, a puny little fellow, whose tenure of life seemed anything but sesuse. Who remained undersized in body throughout early boyhood, smaller than other children of his age, and under the necessity of fighting for rights among his playmates which was accorded without question to those stronger. This son was named John Bartram in appreciation of the fame of the celebrated Philadelphia botanist. Perhaps there may have been a wistful hope on the part of the father that the newborn child might tread in the footsteps of that flower lover. But a less honorable life was th edecree of fate." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 23.

"This year, boarding at the home of Daniel Leigh, I met the neice of Samuel Leigh, Ella Newton, and immediately proceeded to fall in love with her. I think the affection was mutual, for we were married on June 28th, following. This was in 1879. Together, we had not enough money to set up housekeeping, nevertheless, we did, on the very day of our marriage, in the little house between that of Israel Dum and Joseph Leyndecker, the house belonging to Dum, who thus became my landlord. I supplimented the little furniture my new wife was possessed of, mostly bedding, by the purchase of some furniture from George Kreps, who was then operating the furtniture factory belonging to William Homrighaus on some mutual arrancement.", THE VILLAGE, MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS, John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 60.

"Witnessing many of these changes, I seemed to find no place in the activities. I believe I then felt that there was no place in the world's activities for me. It appeared that everything I put my hand to proved a failure. I undertook poultry farming and in that way lost a year's savings from my teaching salary and also funds put in the venture by my sister Eleanora. I continued teaching, not because I liked teaching but because no other opportunity offered.", THE VILLAGE, MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS, John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 58.

John's brother, George, set up a small printing outfit that gave him a little income, but soon after, John and George heard of a printing plant in Logan for sale, as it wasn't being used. They took the traini to Logan and talked to the owner. "IT consisted of an old Franklin hand press, probably one of the oldest in the country, and a fair complement of type for a six-column paper". He knew nothing of the value, and was asking $150. John explained he had no money and would have to pay on time, and "... he must have relied upon my word. He shipped the press immediately without a dollar being paid." John mentions that the village wanted a village newspaper, and "there was more or less hostility against the neighboring village, where it was felt the paper there published was antagonistic to the interests of the VILLAGE." Subscriptions were paid in advance. Their father George moved his broom factory into a smaller room in the building, and they set up their printing business in the larger room. "Not having the money [to pay for the actual paper for the newspaper] the firm of Roby and Bennett bought and furnished us the paper, giving us time to pay for it,, and taking a large part of that pay in advertising". Their paper was called THE LITHOPOLITAN HOME NEWS.

The following year John Bartram Kramer taught school in the Leigh District to earn money for living expenses, as the paper didn't supply that.

1911 - Wanders From Home. Columbus, Oh. Supposedly demented by heat, J. Barton Cramer, 58, former Fairfield county official, now living in Columbus, who wandered from home Saturday has not been located. Police inquiry and telegrams to his former home at Lancaster and Lithopolis have failed to reveal trace of his whereabouts. Fears were entertained by his family that he had wandered to a secluded spot where, overcome by exhaustion, he might be dying from lack of attention. [Marion Daily Star, Marion, Ohio, July 5, 1911].
