"The fire which destroyed Dow Cohagan's garage and blacksmith shop at Jefferson on old Rt. 33 occurred during my vacation. I was sorry to hear about the loss. Mrs. Cohagan is Eagle-Gazette correspondent from the Carroll community. Dow's father, James A. Cohagan started a blacksmith shop across the road from the site 63 years ago. When Dow came back from service in World War I, he left the teaching profession, having taught in the one-room schools of the city 7 years, and built a new garage at Jefferson. He also continued work with the roge after his father retired. Mr. Cohagan had put out the fire for the night and returned home the evening of the fire. He was sitting on his porch when he heard the fire department go out and head west. For some reason he followed them and found his own building in flames. The fireman had removed two cars and saved most of his tools before Dow reached the scene for which he was most grateful. When the Carroll truck ran out of water, the Lithopolis fireman responded. Dow is undecided about the future. He will not rebuild in Jefferson but may construct a garage in Carroll village. [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, July 20, 1962]

Peyton COOK

[11604]

Jul 1830 - ABT 1907

Family 1 :
  1. +Charles A. COOK
Family 2 : Martha SOWERS
Family 3 : Mary E. SOWERS
  1. +Harvey James COOK
  2. +Isaac Newton COOK

 __

|--Peyton COOK
|
|__

INDEX

[11604] NOTE: This family is very 'iffy'. Census data shows some COOK children had a father b in OH rather than VA where Peyton is shown as being born. Perhaps he adopted children from a wife's previous marriage, but wife Martha is shown in one census as having no children.

NOTE: In 1850 he's residing beside Wm. and Nancy COOK, both age 51 or 57 and both b VA, who appear to be living with several children who were also born in VA. This is possibly Peyton's parents and siblings.

CENSUS: 1850 Decatur Twp., Washington Co., OH, p 390.
COOK, Paton, 24y farmer b VA, can't read or write
", Mary E., 21y b VA, can't read or write
", Fidelia, 2/12 b OH

CENSUS: 1860 Deerfield Twp., Morgan Co., OH; p 258
COOK, Payton, 38y farmer b VA
", Mary E., 38y b VA
", Fidelia, 10y b OH
", Alonzo 8y b OH
", Sarah E., 6y b OH
", Richard S., 4y b OH
", ALice 1y b OH
COOK, William, 34y farmer b VA

1864 - "Pyton" Cook enlisted May 2, 1864 as a private at the age of 38 into Company B, 161st Infantry Regiment Onio. Mustered out of same company at Camp Chase, Ohio, Sept. 2, 1864. Historical Data Systems, comp.. American Civil War Soldiers [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 1999.

CENSUS: 1870 Sharon Twp., Franklin Co., OH; p 4
COOK, Payton, 45y farm laborer b VA
", Martha, 25y keeping house b OH
", Fidelia, 19y attending school b OH
", Alonzo, 17y farm laborer b OH
", Sarah, 15y domestic servant b OH
", Richard, 14y farm laborer b OH
", Allen, 10y attending school b OH
", George 8y b OH
", Albert 6y b OH
", Henry 8/12 b OH, born in Nov.
", Mary, 4y b OH

CENSUS: 1880 Greencastle Fairfield Co., OH; visitation 15/15
COOK, Paten, 57y farmer b VA, parents b VA, can't read or write
", Martha, 38y wife, keeping house b OH, parents b PA
HITZER or HITGER, Mary, 14y daughter at home b OH, parents b OH
COOK, Harvey, 10y son at home b OH, parents b OH
", Isaac N., 8y son b OH, parents b OH
", Charlie, 2y son, fa b VA, ma b PA

CENSUS: 1900 Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, SD 11, ED 5, SH 6a, taken June 7th by Felix Taes, visitation
visitation 118/123
COOK, Paten, b Jul 1830, 69y b VA, fa b VA, ma b PA, farmer; mar 24y
", Martha, wife b Jul 1842, 58y b OH, fa b OH, ma b PA, had 0 ch, 0 living
", Charles, son b Jan 1873?, 26?y b OH, parents b OH; day labor
NOTE: wife Martha is shown as never having had a child. "Son" Charles' data shows that his father was b in OH, yet Peyton is shown as being b in VA.

1907 - his wife, Martha, applies for his pension.

NOTE: His wife's name seems to switch from Mary to Martha back to Mary and again to Martha. The first census's show the wife was born in VA, the latter ones, even after Peyton disappears, show she was born in OH. What does NOT make sense is that one of the sons shows his mother's maiden name was "Martha Sowers", and he would've had to been born to this "Mary" according to census records. One year wife Mary or Martha is shown having no children, none living, and another year she supposedly had 6 and 5 living. At some points I believe Mary and Martha are completely different individuals, and at other times I believe they must be the same individual.

NOTE: There's an entry in the cemetery records that lists Peyton Cook, Civil War veteran, next of kin Martha Cook, buried VAE, lot 6, grave 1. There's a good possibility he IS buried there and either no stone was erected for him or it no longer exists. According to Martha's death certificate, she is supposedly buried in Lithopolis cem. as well but there is no entry for her at all. "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 186.

This information may or may NOT be for this particular William Foor:

"William Foor, who had been farming for O. O. Masters, accidentally shot himself last Saturday morning, the wound proving fatal almost instantly. He was starting out on a hunting expedition carrying his gun and leading a dog. In passing through a large gate near the barn he must have been tripped by his dog, as it could be seen where he had slipped, probably causing him to jam down his gun hard, the trigger catching on the gate and being torn off. The load passed through one side of his neck and back of his head, tearing off all the large arteries, muscles and lower part of the brain. He bled to death; he was dead when found. His wife heard the shot and shortly after went to see the cause. Dr. Trimbath was immediately sent for and arrived shortly afterward, but his services were not needed. Mr. Foor was a large and powerful man and just in the prime of life. He was buried on Monday afternoon at Asbury church in Ray's Cove. Rev. A. C. Lathrop preached the funeral sermon to a large concourse of people. [Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA, Dec. 15, 1899]

[16969] NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 311. Full dates. Civil War veteran.

"Next to the Dudgeon home was that of an old German gunsmith, who continued his business of gun making and gun repairing in the front of the building. His name was Conrad Seamon, but he spelled it Koonrod, and he claimed to have had a part in the wars against Napoleon. He had several sons and daughters. John and Conrad Jr. were the sons. The former made his home in Columbus, when grown, and the latter removed to Grass Valley in Nevada. I now recollect another son, Henry, more nearly my own age, who lost his life in a hotel fire in Cleveland, where he was a transcient guest. The daughters were older and married William Oyler, the son of John Oyler, of the buggy manufacturing firm of Hunter, Oyler and Sheffler, and the grandson of Grandpa Jungkurth. These two lived in the Village many years, he operating a carriage factory and she a millinery store. Jefferson and Benjamin were the sons of this marriage. Then, when the children were grown, like so many others this family removed to Columbus.

"An incident in connection with the elder Seamon is fresh in my memory. The village council undertook to curtail what they considered to be the nuisance of the village children playing on the streets at night. An ordinance was passed making it a misdemeanor for a child to be on the streets without a parent after a curfew bell was rung at nine o'clock. Conrad Seamon was then the Village Marshal, and this ordinance surely cut out extra work for him. One man had little chance of controlling fifty or more boys who took great pleasure in circumventing him. When there was an uproar at one end of the Village, to that part Conrad hastened. At once the turmoil was at the other end. Hastening then to that part, he found everything peaceful. Becoming desperate, one night he fired a gun he had with him at the fleeing boys. The next day he was accused, rightly or jestingly, by the father of one of the boys of shooting the heel from his boy's shoe. 'No can be', the old German exclaimed. 'There was no bully in the gun'". INDEX

[7781] NAME/DOD: From Sharon Freeland, Superior, Colorado, via April 1999 email. Her querie on www.genforum.com reads: "I am a great-great-great-granddaughter of HENRY TOMLINSON. The name is often misspelled in early records as TUMBLESON, but the correct spelling is TOMLINSON. "My" HENRY TOMLINSON was in Fairfield County, Ohio, by 1799, as he is on the county tax records for 1799. HENRY TOMLINSON had a daughter named MARY TOMLINSON, but she would not have been old enough to marry in 1802. Henry's other children included JESSE TOMLINSON (Abt 1810 - Abt 1837) and JOSEPH TOMLINSON (1795 - 1829)."

CENSUS:

Jesse's 1844 Partition records mention widow Margaret, and minor children John, William and Henry Tomlinson, "Partition Record Abstracts, V1, 1812-1851 Fairfield County, Ohio", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1987, p 34.

Caseeeeee #1844 is the estate of Jesse Tomlinson of Bloom Twp., filed in 1840. Administrator was first Samuel Coffman and later Noah B. Coffman. Widow was Margaret. Noah B. Coffman was the guardian of minors John, William and Henry, heirs of Jesse Tomlinson. Phebe Tomlinson, wife of Patrick French, is mentioned. Jesse owned land in sections 12 and 13, township 14, range 20. "Fairfield County Will and Estate Abstracts, Cases 1001-2000, Jean Collier, Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1998, p 68.

From Sharon Butsch Freeland of Colorado, via October 2000 email:
"On September 23, 1840, Jesse was summoned to appear in court, for a jury to evaluate his sanity. His father-in-law, John Kauffmann/Coffman, filed a lunacy inquest against Jesse Tomlinson. In the court proceedings, it states that Jesse appeared in person at the hearing, and that Jesse made his mark (an "X") for the court. Fortunately, for Jesse, the jury of his peers ruled in his favor and declared Jesse "is not an idiot nor a lunatic, and neither is he insane."

On May 12, 1841, Jesse Tomlinson (who was executor of his father, Henry Tomlinson's, estate) obtained a mortgage on some of the land his father left his heirs when Henry died in 1837 or 1838. Both Jesse Tomlinson and Margaret Coffman Tomlinson, Jesse's wife, made their marks on the document.

On August 25, 1841, documents were filed with the court to open Jesse Tomlinson's estate and to appoint a guardian for Jesse's three minor sons, John Tomlinson, William Tomlinson, and Henry Tomlinson. Strangely, John Coffman (Jesse's father-in-law who had taken Jesse to court in 1840) died in February of 1841, so these two men died within a few months of each other. It makes me wonder if the insanity charges made by John Coffman against Jesse Tomlinson might have contributed to either one's death, directly or indirectly. Because of the dates of these documents, I conclude that Jesse Tomlinson died AFTER May 12, 1841, and BEFORE August 25, 1841."
